Radio Shack VHS Rewinder Rebuild Part 1
I work on a circa-1996 Radio Shack VHS cassette re-winder, catalog number 44-1201 to see if I can get it to "auto eject" again. This basic model was also sold under the Solidex, Ambico, Veratron, and Walnex brand names so the info here should be applicable to those too. Along the way we rebuild the electronics, talk about drive belts, and explore the miracle of damping grease. Hope all you tape-heads enjoy.

    Hi Sir, I need help with this radio, model 505, please. My father gave me one (he's not with me now), but I'm not sure how to configure the clock. There's another knob behind the radio that doesn't move, and I don't know if it's supposed to be used to configure the clock. I understand how the other buttons in front of the radio work, except for the "set/alarm" function. If you can help, I would be very grateful, sir. :)

    • @WardCo
      @WardCo 12 днів тому

      The knob in the rear moves the hands to set the time. If it is not turning the clock mechanism is jammed up in some way. If you pull out the set/alarm button and turn it, the inner alarm wheel turns to set the alarm time. When it is pulled out, the alarm is "armed" and you push it in to silence the alarm when it goes off.

      @@WardCo Sir, you are correct; the clock mechanism appears to be jammed in some way. The seconds knob is working, and the alarm is functioning as well, but I can't set the correct time I read that old mechanisms like this one sometimes need a bit of lubrication. Could that be the issue? I will attempt to fix it Thank you for your help; I really appreciate it

      Internet says try this: Press and hold the "Rear Wash" button for 5 seconds Release all buttons. Push the Power on/off button once to turn off the unit. Unplug the power cord and wait for about 10 seconds. Plug the power cord back in and turn the unit on.

    Oh, I forgot to mention in the closing that, off camera, I broke apart the array and re-created it with every possible chunk size from 16K-256K and tested each one. Read speeds were close enough to each other to not be a big factor, but write speeds noticeably dropped at 128K and 256K. In the end, 32K and 64K seemed to perform best. (I personally stayed at 32K.)

      I've actually been shopping 4-slot Synology boxes since it's been about a decade since I've had a NAS in the house, I thought it might be time to revisit, but the fact that I/O to it is bound by network speeds ultimately negated the advantage of having a shared resource with redundancy -- for me, anyway.

    Hey. So, I have this washer. I’ve had random issues over the past few months of the door not locking all the way. Well, noticed this morning, went to go turn the washer on, all the lights blinked really fast one time and the washer won’t power up at all. I’ve unplugged it for an hour and tried again, same thing. Could this door switch cause that to happen?

    • @WardCo
      @WardCo Місяць тому

      Probably not. Door closing problems (at least with my machine) are generally the result of the tub seal getting in the way thus making you push the door to get the solenoid to latch. I'd say you're getting into control board problems (and I did a video when I swapped ua-cam.com/video/MHuAVtVPqAA/v-deo.html) but the fact that your machine is not powering up at all points to power supply problems, and I *think* power goes to the motor control board in the back first and then up to the control board. So, if it were me, I'd poke around on the motor control board and take some readings and look for damage -- the idea being to verify if power is being sent up to the control board at all before tearing into the top/front of the unit to get to that.
